Maradona dies aged 60

Diego Maradona has died at the age of 60.

Maradona, who won the World Cup with Argentina in 1986 and is widely regarded as one of the greatest football players of all time, suffered a heart attack at his Buenos Aires home.

Alberto Fernandez, the President of Argentina, said: “You took us to the top of the world. You made us immensely happy. You were the greatest of all. Thanks for having existed, Diego. We will miss you for life.”

Fernandez added there will be three days of national mourning in Argentina.

City qualify for Champions League last-16

For the eighth successive season, Manchester City have qualified for the Champions League knockout stages.

Phil Foden’s 36th-minute goal proved to be enough and City never looked like surrendering their lead.

They are unbeaten in their last 15 Champions League group games, and have won four from four this season.

Gordon Taylor to step down from PFA

Gordon Taylor is set to end his 40-year tenure as chief executive of the Professional Footballers’ Association by the end of the season.

The 75-year-old set out plans for his departure in a letter to union members on Wednesday afternoon.

Taylor’s planned departure follows the completion of an independent review into the PFA, which recommended a complete structural overhaul of the union.

Alderweireld injury not as bad as first feared

Ahead of Tottenham Hotspur’s Europa League clash with Ludogorets, Jose Mourinho revealed the extent of the adductor injury Toby Alderweireld suffered against Manchester City:

“He has a muscular injury but not as big as we initially thought.

“He will have time to be out, but not like a month which was immediately what we thought. I would say between two and four weeks.”

Bielsa and Klopp nominated for FIFA men’s coach of the year

After winning the Championship and Premier League respectively last season, Marcelo Bielsa and Jurgen Klopp have been nominated for the men’s coach of the year at The Best FIFA Football Awards.

Bayern Munich’s Hansi Flick, Real Madrid’s Zinedine Zidane and Sevilla’s Julian Lopetegui were also nominated.

The winner of the award, along with six others from different categories, will be announced on December 17.

Wenger says a manager’s job is to “believe in human beings”

In an exclusive interview with The Athletic’s Amy Lawrence, Arsene Wenger spoke extensively on football management.

“The job of a manager is basically a guy who believes in human beings,” he said. “Because you put your destiny in the hands of others and say ‘you can do that for me’.”
